BLEEP; Lucia Hartini vs Rene Magritte (5 Similarities and Differences)

False Mirror, Rene Magritte

Srikandi, Lucia Hartini

Similarities
1. Both works are realistic in nature, using clarity of the real world to shock and intrigue the viewer.
2. Both works use the human body (eye) as a subject matter.
3. They both warp reality into a place where distortion of actual objects come into play.
4. Colors are very important in both works in bringing out the impact of realism on the viewer.
5. The tone of the human skin is appropiate in both works.

Differences
1. Magritte's subject matter simplistically takes up the entire canvas becoming the subject matter while Hartini's work has a background which makes the subject matter less appealing as Magritte's but still clearly defined.
2. Magritte's work is more simplistic as compared to Hartini's which has a more complex composition.
3. There is almost a lack of depth in Magritte's work, safe for the clouds within the eye which create an illusion of space, as compared to Hartini's work which has a vanishing point and whose lines are created by the brick wall to create depth.
4. There is lesser visual colour in Magritte's work as compared to Hartini's whose work is more vibrant in colour.
5. Magritte's title is more ambiguous as opposed to Hartini, and his title lets the viewer be open to further interpretations of his simplistic artpiece whereas Hartini creates interpretations through her amalgamation of various objects and backgrounds.
